축제를 위한 '5월의 궁'의 목적은 건물, 광장 및 거리를 연결하고 소통하는 것이다. 축제가 서울 광장과 함께 도시 전역으로 확대될 수 있게 해준다. 이 구조물은 하늘을 향해 치솟아 있다. 동시에 그것은 도시와 세계의 통합 지점을 만든다. 천연 재료를 적극 활용한 '5월의 궁'은 전통과 첨단 기술을 잘 조화시킨다. 바람은 건물에 나란히 불며 유동성에 기여한다. 흰색 반투명 천에서 들어오는 빛은 방문객들에게 멋진 공간을 선사하는 자연적 요소이다.
